THE  STORY OF THE CHIVA

Here is a bit of history on the origins of the “Chiva” the typical Colombian rural bus, it is properly called a “Chiva”, which means goat, for like a goat it negotiates all types of hills and dirt roads crisscrossing small towns and villages of not only Colombia, but also of most of the countries of South and Central America, as well as Mexico.  It is usually a 1960’s vintage bus with a seating capacity of 40 tightly fitted passengers who travel from town to town along the Cordillera with the goods and merchandise to be sold on market day. Most of their cargo is stowed on the roof along with a few passengers riding aloft who do not want to miss the beautiful scenery offered by the many mountains and volcanoes rising thousands of feet above sea level.

In New York, the “Chiva” has become a symbol for ex patriot Colombians of their way of life, projecting a positive image of their true values and culture.  It is also a moving showcase of their customs and traditions while participating in the many ethnic parades and festivals held in New York City’s five boroughs throughout the year. Five years ago The “Chiva” was featured at an international coffee fair held in New Orleans where many visitors had their pictures taken while boarding the “Chiva”.

Due to its mobility the “Chiva” may also be used as a moving billboard.  The “Chiva” offers its advertisers mobility and location since this rolling billboard displays messages and products in new areas to consumers who are unaware of other modes of advertisement.  Since it is an eye-catcher, messages are highly effective since the “Chiva” has been captured in many photos and videos that continue to spread the word on the advertiser.

Essentially, these are the highlights of the “Chiva” comparable only to the double-decker London buses currently plying the street of New York.  However, the nimble “Chiva” may venture into areas where the double-decker bus would not dare to go.  The “Chiva” has come to New York and will remain as one more contribution of the traditions and customs of our friends from the South.
